Campaign in North Rhine-Westfalia

The symbol of our campaign: like a coach the citizens can decide about the team selection.

North Rhine-Westphalia is one out of four German regions which has not reformed its election law yet. In 12 other Bundesländer (Federal states) citizens can split and cumulate their votes.

However, the government has announced a reform in autumn. The regional branch of Mehr Demokratie has started a campaign to inform citizens about the changes. In addition, we push forward a far-reaching proposal for the new regulation. The blueprint for that is the applicable law in Hesse.

The new regulation should limit the power political of parties. Currently, a candidate's rank is decisive. If you are on top of the list, you are most likely to enter the municipal council. Only the parties decide about the order of the list. This will change. Voters can then deliberately vote for each candidate, even if he is on the bottom of the list. If enough voter do this composition of the council might change.

Only four (red) countries do not know the enhanced regulations for voting. North Rhine-Westfalia is the biggest of them.

The information campaign is based on street work: Citizens can take part in a test election. We also organise public debates. There we explain our proposal and discuss the political situation.

You can read more about our proposal and test our proposals online. In the test election you can cast 15 votes. This figure differs from town to town: the citizens will be able to cast as many votes as there are representatives in the municipal council.
