More Democracy in Europe

Reloaded. Updated version of our well-known discussion paper available. In May 2002 we published a paper edited by Michael Efler called "More Democracy in Europe". It presents visionary ideas about the necessity of two elements of direct democracy:

a) referendums on all steps deepening the European integration in all countries concerned, and

b) a three-step procedure for direct democracy in the EU .

Almost three years later the situation has changed. We have partly achieved our goals:

10 countries are expected to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution, and the European Citizens Initiative found its way in the Treaty establishing a Constitution in Europe (Article 47-4).

We have updated our publication

There is still a lot of work to do: We want to increase further the influence citizens have on the decision-making process in the European Union.

It is vital to spread our ideas and discuss them further. Read the paper and take part in this discussion.
