Twenty-five people from a variety of different European NGOs

gathered in Brussels to talk about the chances for a campaign

promoting the quick implementation of the European Citizens’

Initiative (ECI).

At the meeting, I saw a lot of new faces. This was encouraging.

The follow-up meeting will be organised in Brussels on 20 January.

You are invited to join us.

In this newsletter you will find a report from the meeting and a summary of some of the contradictory statements politicians have recently made in answer to the question: Is the ratification process of the

EU constitution stopped or merely interrupted? We also present an English

version of our paper on referendums in Bavaria since some of you have

asked us for a translation. There are also details about our

meetings in Brussels and Berlin.

Europe’s top politicians are not sure how to proceed with the

EU Constitution. Here is an overview of the proposals made

in January and the remarkable reaction from a pro-European

member of the Dutch Parliament.
